MONASTIRAKI QUARTER

Place to visit Monastiraki (small monastery in Greek) is an old and poor quarter that in the 19th century used to be used by blacksmith’s workshops. Nowadays it is essentially the flee-market of Athens. On the narrow Ifestou street, shops loaded with merchandise hanging from their awnings and outdoors street traders display, especially on Sundays, mostly second-hand merchandise: vintage clothing, old style appliances, artifacts, vinyl records, used books, paintings and miniatures, furniture and all sorts of other strange but interesting items. There are also some antique shops. On the other side of Avissinias square, on Pandrossou street leading to Syntagma square and the town’s commercial center, the shops are more modern. More info
